Presenter Ben Messina

Ben is a Landscape and Nature photographer originally from Cairns, Australia, who now lives on the inspiring Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Being the son of a professional commercial photographer Ben’s passion for photography started at a young age. He was fortunate to be exposed to the art of black and white hand printing through his father, and it was the production of his own prints that encouraged him to appreciate his creativity and pursue a future in photography.

Ben spent the early years of his career creating cutting edge commercial imagery and enjoyed success in this field. In recognition of his growing passion for landscape photography in 2002 Ben was loaned a Linhof 6x17 film camera by a fellow landscape photographer. The 6x17 format truly resonated with Ben so without hesitation Ben bought his own 6x17 camera that he still uses today, alongside his medium format digital setup.

In 2004 Ben opened his first solo gallery in Cairns, which was a great success. In 2005 Ben decided to move the gallery to Brisbane city, which was located in the famous heritage listed Brisbane Arcade, which he ran successfully for 4 years. Some of the highlights during this period was being commissioned by Coca Cola Amatil to supply 20 large scale framed landscapes for the Royal Brisbane Hospital Burns Unit. Ben was also commissioned by the Wesley Hospital to produce 12 large scale framed landscapes for the east wing redevelopment.

Ben currently operates his signature gallery in Maleny on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, which features a wide range of Ben’s collection from over 15 years of travelling around Australia and New Zealand chasing the light. In 2014 Ben self published his first book called Light on the Land. One of the iconic images featured in this publication placed in the top 10 of the 2014 international Pano Awards. The image “Eye of the Storm” depicts a rare storm cell thundering over an outback sand dune in Mungo National Park NSW.

In April 2014 Ben’s image ‘River City’ was chosen by the Premier of Queensland as the official gift from Queensland for the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Also that year, in November, Ben was chosen as the official gift provider for the Brisbane G20 Summit. Ben supplied thirty four artworks which were presented to all G20 world leaders.
